Die Nacht von Lissabon. Regie | directed by Dominique Schnizer.
Theater Osnabrück, 2020. |
in Osnabrück, teils in Lissabon.
Schauspieldirektor Dominique Schnizer reizt an Remarques vorletztem Roman (erschienen
Cornelius

The play Die
Nacht von Lissabon was staged at the Osnabrück
Theater in 2020. The piece, which is based on Remarque's novel The Night in Lisbon from 1962 and was
performed on the occasion of Remarque’s 50th anniversary of his death and
premiered on August 29, is about flight and emigration. The action takes
place partly in Osnabrück, partly in Lisbon. The theater provides information about the
production: »There they, the refugees, stand at the water’s edge, desperately
hoping to get on one of the ships that are supposed to bring them to safety.
The time and place of the action are not somewhere in Africa today, but in
1942 in the port of Lisbon. On the 50th anniversary of Remarque’s death,
Dominique Schnizer’s production shows how
up-to-date this report of a refugee is tragically even today. The main
character, a man named Schwarz, speaks to us directly and wants to make a
deal with us if we just listen to his life story for one night. The fact that his memories of the escape from
Osnabrück are complex and emotional is also shown by an independent image
level in the video projections with which the production works and with which
Schwarz repeatedly contacts. This is how history and the present begin to
speak to one another. And we, who are witnesses to Schwarz's story, have to
ask ourselves at the end how we deal with the responsibility of this memory. Drama director Dominique Schnizer
is attracted to Remarque’s novel (published in 1962) because of the contrast
between the local color of Osnabrück, which one can assume as a familiar
atmosphere, and the sometimes morbid charm of
Lisbon, a city on the edge of Europe, whose architecture still has a
grandiose past and an uncertain future are enrolled. This tension between
home and foreign is the actual setting for a story about human being thrown
in the midst of an inexorable world.« In the exhibition »Weltweit Worldwide
Remarque«, in addition to the poster for the Osnabrück production, other
theater adaptations of Remarque’s works are presented. |
